Synopsis

In 'Looking Up,' the camera turns its lens on three individuals whose lives intersect through a shared love for birdwatching. As the story unfolds, each character opens up about their personal battles with mental health, navigating the turbulent waters of burnout, depression, anxiety, and trauma. This short film doesn't sugarcoat life's challenges, but it gently reminds us that sometimes, the simple act of reconnecting with nature—watching birds, in this case—can be a powerful remedy. 'Looking Up' is a down-to-earth exploration of personal struggles, resilience, and the unexpected healing that can come from a pair of binoculars and a bit of fresh air.

Director's biography

"Though "Looking Up" started as a student project, we quickly realised the potential impact for the film and decided we wanted to take it as far as we could. The film uniquely draws its audience to the natural world and more specifically the world of birding, through a mental health lens. "Looking Up" shows how our Earth not only gives us air for our lungs but peace to our minds. The scope of mental health issues and trauma from characters of different walks of life can connect to a wide audience and yet bring everyone back together to hear the birds sing. We are especially excited to have included birds like the sparrow and blackbird that may not be the usual contenders for the limelight. We are honoured to have been trusted with stories of those at their lowest and impacted by the trials of the modern world, and the story of a man finding his life again after experiencing sexual assault. We believe these components of the natural and social in "Looking Up" make it a truly special documentary.

Our film belongs at the Early Bird International Student film festival because it is a powerful documentary that can connect us to our planet while reminding us that we are not alone. This is done through eloquent storytelling, genuine characters, stunning and creative cinematography and careful sound design. Each aspect of the film has been finessed to its full potential from the hearts of the three women who were alongside the story from start to finish. Now, we hope the impact of "Looking Up" can truly begin as we bring audiences with us on this journey."
