Freedom

by Adrián Sánchez Serrano

Willem de Kooning Academie, Spain

Synopsis

Mari Lista (64) and Elisa Lourenço (29) are two women that never met each other, yet they share the same job: barnacle collecting. This profession is one of the most dangerous in the fishing sector. The women known as ‘percebeiras” approach by foot, only with a neoprene, a basket and sometimes, a rope, the life-threatening spikey rocks that conform the Galician coastline. There, along their (mostly) female colleagues, will fight the great surge of the Atlantic during the winter to collect the precious product. This is a story of love for one’s culture and heritage, that tells a tale of courage, of embracing the risks that living freely, by your our rules comes with.
