Today, Mum Died

by Anis Bribi
La Fémis, France

Jury Motivation by Mariusz Rusiński

For a deeply moving and subtle portrait of grief, displacement, and the universal need for human connection. Following the protagonist on the day of his mother's death as he searches for his estranged brother, the film weaves a rich tapestry of complex behaviours among characters who are quietly aching for tenderness. With remarkable sensitivity and a deeply humanistic gaze, this work reminds us how fragile and essential closeness is in a divided world.

Synopsis

After his mother's death, Malik sets off with his girlfriend, Sarah, to find his younger brother who was placed in foster care. A night-time journey that confronts him with the violence of the past, unspoken truths, and shame.
